Frequently Asked Questions

20 honest answers about red light therapy, results, safety, and everything else. No hype. No weasel words.

Science & How It Works

What is red light therapy, and how does it grow hair?

Red light therapy (technically Low-Level Laser Therapy, or LLLT) uses a specific wavelength of light — 650nm — that penetrates your scalp and reaches your hair follicles. There, it activates an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase, which boosts ATP (cellular energy) production in follicle cells.

More ATP = more cellular activity = follicles that were dormant restart the growth phase and produce thicker hair shafts.

Is there actual science behind this, or is it marketing?

It's real. LLLT has been studied in peer-reviewed journals for over a decade. Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials show statistically significant hair count increases — up to ~35% in 16–24 weeks in some studies.

The FDA cleared LLLT for male pattern hair loss in 2007 and for female pattern hair loss in 2011. There are 32+ FDA-cleared home-use LLLT devices in the category.

Why 650nm specifically?

650nm is the clinically preferred wavelength for hair regrowth. It penetrates deep enough to reach the follicle base without being absorbed too superficially. Shorter wavelengths don't penetrate deep enough; longer wavelengths (near-infrared, 800+nm) penetrate deeper but are better suited for different treatment goals.

How does this compare to finasteride or minoxidil?

Different mechanisms. Finasteride blocks DHT (the hormone that shrinks follicles). Minoxidil widens scalp blood vessels to push nutrients to follicles. LLLT boosts mitochondrial energy production in follicle cells.

They all work — but LLLT is the only one with zero systemic side effects, and it can be combined with the others for compound results.

Can HairBoostLab regrow hair where I'm completely bald?

No — and we'll never claim otherwise. LLLT works on dormant or miniaturized follicles. If your scalp is shiny, smooth, and has no visible follicles (peach fuzz, fine hairs), those follicles are no longer viable. A hair transplant is your only option at that point.

LLLT is a prevention and early-reversal tool — the earlier you start, the more hair you can save.

Results & Timeline

How long until I see results?

Weeks 2–6: Reduced shedding (first sign it's working)

Months 2–4: Baby hairs / peach fuzz thickening; slight density increase

Months 4–6: Visible density and thickness improvement

Months 6–12: Peak results

Consistency is everything. 10 minutes every day beats 30 minutes once a week.

Do I have to use it forever?

LLLT is maintenance therapy — like going to the gym. If you stop completely, hair quality slowly reverts over 6–12 months. Most users settle into 3–4 sessions per week after the first 6 months, which is enough to maintain gains.

What if I don't see results?

You're protected by our 90-day money-back guarantee. If you use HairBoostLab daily for 90 days and see no visible improvement, send it back. We refund you in full and cover return shipping.

Can I stack it with minoxidil / finasteride / biotin?

Yes — and we recommend it. Clinical studies show LLLT combined with minoxidil outperforms either treatment alone. HairBoostLab enhances, not replaces, your existing routine.

Is red light therapy good for beard growth too?

The 650nm mechanism is the same, but HairBoostLab's cap form factor is designed for scalp coverage, not beard. For beard, you'd need a handheld wand or panel. We may release a beard product in the future.

Safety

Are there any side effects?

None reported in clinical literature for LLLT at 650nm at consumer-device power levels. It's non-thermal (no heat), non-invasive, and FDA-cleared as a category. A small number of users report slight scalp tingling in the first few sessions — this fades quickly.

Can I use it if I'm on medication?

Most medications are fine. The exceptions are photosensitizing drugs — certain antibiotics (tetracyclines), isotretinoin (Accutane), some chemotherapy drugs, and St. John's wort, among others. If you're on any of these, please consult your doctor before use.

Is it safe for pregnancy or breastfeeding?

We recommend consulting your doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. While LLLT has no known systemic effects, we err on the side of caution.

Can it damage my eyes?

Not while wearing the cap — the LEDs face your scalp, not your face. Don't stare directly into the LEDs when the cap is powered on and off your head (same as you wouldn't stare into any bright LED).

Is it safe for sensitive scalps or after a hair transplant?

Generally yes, and some transplant surgeons even recommend LLLT post-op to speed graft recovery. But always follow your surgeon's timeline — usually 2–4 weeks after the procedure.
